VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES

One of my main goals as Vice President of the student body at L.A. Mission College is to increase the civic engagement of students prior to the midterm elections. I pursued this goal through get out the vote campaigns, voter registration drive, and advocacy weeks to support our undocumented students on campus.

One of our voter registration drives was featured in the local news. The story, as well as my interview, can be found here.

GIRL UP

I founded and currently run a Girl Up Club at Los Angeles Mission College to raise awareness about the injustices and inequalities that girls in the developing world face. Together we put on an International Day of the Girl event where I interviewed a panel of four inspiring women who were making a difference in their communities through education, politics, and female empowerment.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL EVENT

The Girl Up Club I founded celebrated the International Day of the Girl on October 11th by inviting women who are making a difference in their community through education and politics to our panel discussion and fundraiser.

I interviewed Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, Assemblywoman Luz Rivas, Professor Myriam Levy, and Activist Joy Collins-Brodt about the power of education and female empowerment and how we can leverage political advocacy to strengthen and promote those things.

After the panel discussion, we had a bake sale to raise money for refugee girls’ education and we had attendees write letters to our Senators asking them to support Senate Bill 1580, or the Protecting Girls’ Access to Education In Vulnerable Settings Act.

GET INFORMED, YO

In 2016 and 2017, I was the recipient of the Kode With Klossy scholarship through which I learned how to code in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. In 2017, one of the apps I made was called Get Informed, Yo and the purpose of the app was to connect constituents more closely to their elected officials in a fun and easily accessible. You can explore the app here and read our feature on Kode With Klossy’s blog here.

OPERATION MISSION GRATITUDE

I am running an initiative at my community college entitled Operation Mission Gratitude whose mission is to identify at least needy families in our community and provide them with a meal and gifts this holiday season. My responsibilities include reaching out to supermarkets for food donations, creating flyers, and managing my team to make sure the initiative is a success.

CLUB RUSH

One of my main responsibilities as Vice President at L.A. Mission Colleges is to plan and organize club rushes every month. Club rushes are school wide events in which all of the clubs on campus recruit students, promote their events, and try to increase student engagement on campus. So far, I have ran three club rushes that have helped students become more involved and engaged in their school.

DRESSEMBER

For the past two years, I have participated in the Dressember campaign, which is a month long fundraiser in December in which I wore a dress for the entire month to raise money and awareness for the fight against human trafficking. In total, the Dressember campaign raised $2 million last year, which was also the year I interned with them.
